The reel is the most critical component of a fly rod setup, aside perhaps from the line itself. A fly reel is not only the spool that holds extra line while fishing, but it also allows an angler to control the amount of line in the water. A small stop also prevents the line from being unraveled completely when it encounters a fish. Without it, the fish might simply swim away with the entire line, which wouldn’t be very conducive to catching fish! Today, the most common reels by far are large arbor fly reels. They’re called “large arbor fly reels” because of the size of the arbor, or the small cylinder in the center of a reel which the line is wound around. Large arbor fly reels are preferable because of their size in comparison to older, more traditional style fly reels. The larger size allows for a smoother, faster draw from the reel.
